While energy costs have increased in recent years, the wattage required for equipment that powers home TV and broadband services has been cut dramatically. Through two separate voluntary agreements between cable providers and consumer electronics manufacturers, the energy efficiency of set-top boxes and home internet equipment like routers and modems has been increased significantly and consumers are seeing reductions in both greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs since the programs began nine years ago.
