A Look at Cable's Past

It’s been said that we live in a golden age of television. With high-quality programs like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, we’ve reached a point in which the quality and production value of TV has reached a level that was once held exclusively by big budget Hollywood films. But where did this all come from? How did cable go from a small organization in the 1950s delivering broadcast channels via community antennas to an entertainment juggernaut capable of almost sweeping the 2013 Golden Globe awards?

Well, it’s quite a story, but a big part of the answer is The Cable Show. Since 1951 (back when it was called The National Show) the cable industry has met once a year to discuss and plan how to make cable a better, more accessible product for all Americans. And we’re proud to say that The Cable Show will be held this year in our hometown of Washington, DC from June 10th to June 12th. So with The Cable Show four months away, we’ve decided to take a look back at some of our favorite moments that share the incredible history of The Cable Show and cable TV itself. So starting today, look out for #storyofcable on both @CableShow and @NCTACable. We’ll be showing some of the great, nostalgic, funky, weird images and art from The Cable Show’s past that helps tell the story of cable’s future - like this cover art from the 1969 show in San Francisco.
