Kyle McSlarrow To Serve as Next President & CEO of NCTA

Washington, DC – Kyle McSlarrow, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy and a former top aide to key members of the U.S. Senate, has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), effective March 1, 2005.

McSlarrow will serve as the cable industry's chief advocate and representative in its relationship with the U.S. Congress, the Administration, the Federal Communications Commission, and other federal agencies, and will manage the staff, programs, and initiatives of NCTA. He will succeed NCTA President & CEO Robert Sachs.

"Kyle brings to NCTA a long record of achievement in government, a history of success in working with congressional leaders, solid experience in dealing with regulatory issues, and a strong belief in cable's potential to serve the needs of American consumers in a free and competitive marketplace," said Glenn Britt, Chairman and CEO, Time Warner Cable, and Chairman of the NCTA Board of Directors. "We are fortunate to have Kyle join NCTA, particularly as Congress embarks on a major review of the 1996 Telecommunications Act."

"The cable industry is providing great benefit to consumers through its quality programming, dynamic new services, and superior technology. By providing jobs for more than a million Americans, it's also a major staple of the U.S. economy and a great contributor to the life of our communities. I'm honored to represent the many fine people and companies that comprise the industry, and I'm eager to lead the effort to tell cable's story in Washington," said McSlarrow.

McSlarrow has served as Deputy Secretary of Energy and Chief Operating Officer of the Department since 2001 and announced last week his resignation from the post effective next month.

At the time of that announcement, Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham praised McSlarrow for his dedication and management skills.

"As the Department's Chief Operating Officer, Kyle has led and implemented many of the successful reforms of the last four years," Secretary Abraham said. "Perhaps his greatest accomplishment has been in overseeing the dramatic change in how this Department is managed – most visibly seen in the Department's rating by the Office of Management and Budget as the best managed Cabinet agency in 2004 after having been rated as the worst in 2001.

"On a personal note, Kyle has worked closely with me to implement all of the major initiatives of this Administration. He has done so with total dedication to the job, our President and our country. I am grateful for his friendship and for his service to our nation."

A former candidate for Congress in Virginia's 8th Congressional District, McSlarrow also has served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief Counsel to former U.S. Senators Bob Dole (R-KS) and Trent Lott (R-MS) when each served as Senate Majority Leader; and as Chief of Staff for the late U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell (R-GA). An attorney, he has worked in private practice in Washington, DC, on environmental and energy litigation, and he served as Assistant to the General Counsel of the Army while a Captain in the U.S. Army.

McSlarrow, a native of Virginia, earned degrees from Cornell University and the University of Virginia School of Law.

The appointment of McSlarrow concludes a six-month national executive search, Britt said.

NCTA President & CEO Robert Sachs, who announced last year his intention not to seek renewal of his contact at the conclusion of its term, will complete his service February 28.

"Robert has had great success in achieving a favorable regulatory environment for new broadband services. He has been a true leader of the highest integrity and an effective advocate in helping the cable industry achieve its public policy goals. We've valued Robert's help in managing this leadership transition, and we offer him our sincere thanks," Britt said.
