Broadband, Tech & Wireless Associations Offer Consensus Privacy Framework to FCC

Today, NCTA and four other trade associations sent a proposal to FCC Chairman Wheeler setting forth guidelines and principles for the FCC to consider as it moves forward with a rulemaking on broadband privacy. This consensus privacy framework will protect consumer privacy in a way that is consistent with other privacy laws that apply to other companies in the Internet ecosystem. This framework includes principles on four separate areas: transparency, respect for context and consumer choice, data security, and data breach notifications. As the FCC considers each of these areas, the FCC should draw from the FTC’s longstanding and effective unfairness and deception approach to privacy. A copy of the letter can be found here.
