Two decades after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, National Geographic is commemorating the anniversary with a powerful new docuseries, “Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time.” The five-part series explores the disaster’s immediate and long-term effects while honoring the resilience of the city’s people.
Directed by Oscar-nominated Traci A. Curry, the series brings a deeply personal lens to one of the country’s most defining natural disasters. The series premiered on July 27 at 8/7c on National Geographic with three back-to-back episodes.
A story of resilience and humanity
When Hurricane Katrina surged through the city of New Orleans, residents were left to face the rising floodwater alone. Using eyewitness testimonies and archival footage, National Geographic showcases the resiliency of the New Orleans residents who united against the disaster.
“The series goes beyond the headlines. It reveals stories of survival, heroism and resilience,” said producers Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian.
Uncovering the truth
“Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time” doesn’t just recount the events of Katrina. It challenges the myths and misinformation that followed in its wake. The producers describe it as a “vital historical record and a call to witness, remember, and reckon with the truth of Hurricane Katrina’s legacy.”
A collaborative effort
National Geographic had an impressive lineup in the making of this documentary, working with Oscar and Emmy-winning producers at Lightbox, acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler and his production company, Proximity Media, and directed by Oscar-nominated Traci A. Curry.
The star-studded team helped ensure that the series would reveal the true stories of the New Orleans residents who turned into heroes amidst disaster. The gripping series highlights the need to ensure that all communities are equipped to face the challenges of disaster recovery with dignity and resilience.
