FOX Business Story Highlights Attacks on Critical Communications Networks

NCTA President & CEO Cory Gardner advocates for federal legislation in this interview.

In a FOX Business story discussing the rise of physical attacks on America’s critical communications infrastructure, NCTA President & CEO Cory Gardner advocated for federal legislation, saying, “We have to do as much as we can, every step of the way, to make it as difficult as possible for them to succeed. And to know if they do that, they’ve got to recognize the real consequences.”

Broadband and wireless networks are essential lifelines — powering emergency services, supporting economic activity, enabling education, and keeping families connected. But recent data show these networks face a troubling surge in theft, vandalism, and sabotage that disrupts service, endangers public safety, and imposes real costs on communities across the country.

At the heart of this challenge are incidents that cut fiber-optic cables, damage wireless towers, and knock out critical connections — sometimes leaving 911 systems, hospitals, schools, and businesses offline. Industry reporting reveals more than 15,000 attacks between June 2024 and June 2025, affecting millions of customers and highlighting the urgent need for stronger protections, law enforcement resources, and national policy solutions.
