Comcast Unleashes Next-Gen Connectivity in Rural Pennsylvania

In an effort to improve connectivity and address the increasing demands of local residents, Comcast recently completed a noteworthy project in Jermyn and Mayfield, Pennsylvania. The company already has a robust presence in 54 counties across the state, and this expansion will serve more people in the Lackawanna County footprint, providing more than 2,100 new customers with residential broadband speeds up to 1.2 gigabits per second and business speeds up to 100 gigabits per second.

The Jermyn/Mayfield Project is part of Comcast's broader commitment, including a $2.4 billion investment in the state over the last three years. Ricky Frazier Jr., the Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Keystone Region, provided insights into the motivations, challenges, and accomplishments of the Jermyn/Mayfield Project.

Frazier highlighted the community-driven aspect of the project, stating, "Local residents championed Comcast to move into the market." The expansion project was inspired by the numerous requests from Jermyn and Mayfield residents who frequented the local Xfinity Store, which serves as a powerful link to the community.

The area's diverse geography presented unique challenges, including railroad crossings within the project's footprint. But the teams adeptly navigated these challenges, creating solutions that minimized impact on the project's scope, timeline, and budget. Frazier explained, "Our teams are uniquely positioned to develop creative solutions that allow Comcast to grow and build in new markets quickly without sacrificing quality, speed, and reliability."

The success of the Jermyn/Mayfield Project is attributed to collaborative efforts among Comcast teams, external partners, utility companies, and community leaders.

Frazier emphasized the importance of strong relationships in overcoming logistical hurdles, stating, "Our longstanding, strong relationships across Pennsylvania, and now in Jermyn and Mayfield, enabled us to plan, build, and go to market seamlessly so we could service more customers more quickly."

Frazier also explained that while the Jermyn/Mayfield Project was not dependent on a nearby project happening in Wilkes-Barre, the ISP leveraged existing infrastructure, resources, and personnel between Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. This strategic approach allowed Comcast to respond effectively to consumer demand in the region.
