The American Cross Platform Media Consumer

Americans consume a LOT of media across all screens and devices and at all times – almost 60 hours a week, according to Nielsen's recently published “A Look Across Media: The Cross-Platform Report.” Understanding how entertainment is reaching consumers is key to the future of TV and broadband Internet strategies. Traditional television still dominates with an average time spent of about 35 hours per week. What’s more revealing, however, is that the average time spent watching video on mobile and watching video on the Internet is up from the previous year. According to Nielsen, the average person spent 1.5 hours a week consuming video on the Internet, or about 13 minutes per day, up from 1.3 hours in 2012.  Additionally, the average person spent 1.3 hours a week consuming video on mobile devices, or about 11 minutes per day, up from 1.25 hours in 2012.

From traditional TV to gaming devices to online video and mobile, the competition for American’s time is greater than ever. There is so much entertainment and media to consume, and not enough hours in the day.
