The Integration Ban: A 90% Penalty

Yesterday, Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) and Congressman Gene Green (D-TX) introduced bipartisan legislation to remove the FCC’s integration ban, while maintaining the FCC’s ability to regulate set-top boxes in the future. This is an important piece of legislation for the future of in-home technology and we’ve written about it before on Cable Tech Talk. What you need to know is right here.

So for this week’s #BroadData, we wanted to again share a piece of data that sums up just how inconsistently CableCARD rules are currently applied. Since the integration ban was adopted in 1998, cable companies have been saddled with the responsibility of implementing redundant decryption technology in set-top boxes. This is expensive and wasteful. It’s time to end the integration ban. We commend Congressman Latta and Congressman Green for putting forward legislation that will solve this problem.
