Cybersecurity Awareness Month a Nod to Everyone's Role in a Safe Internet

As National Cybersecurity Awareness Month comes to a close, we wanted to reflect on some of the more significant cybersecurity accomplishments of the cable industry both during this month and in general. As the nation’s leading provider of broadband, cable companies have been at the forefront of developing and implementing best practices for identifying and addressing cybersecurity risks.

The nature of networks makes cybersecurity a problem that spans the globe. From startups to the Internet’s largest corporations, ensuring products and services are secure is a shared responsibility. Towards this end, the cable industry is active in industry working groups such as the Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG), the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and North American Network Operators Group (NANOG) where Internet engineers collaborate on securing the Internet from cyber threats such as email spam, malware, and network attacks.

No matter how much work cable has been put into developing secure networks, cyber criminals will always look for new exploits. To tackle the next generation of cyber threats, The Comcast Center of Excellence for Security Innovation at the University of Connecticut (CSI) is hosting its 2015 CyberSEED event later this week. CyberSEED brings together top information security professionals and business leaders to discuss emerging cybersecurity trends. One area of primary focus is securing the hardware used in cell phones, tablets and computers to prevent embedded cyber threats inside the silicon chips of Internet devices.

The NCTA was proud to participate in National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and we all have a role in making the Internet safer and more secure for everyone. For additional cybersecurity tips and resources, visit www.dhs.gov/stopthinkconnect.
