Cable Impacts in So Many Ways

placeholder

Earlier this week we announced the formation of Cable Impacts, a new foundation leveraging cable’s resources – including its platform, technology and content – in order to empower consumers and enhance communities. The impact cable makes comes from all corners of our industry, from programmers to operators to content creators. Below, we've highlighting a few of the achievements in corporate social responsibility our member companies are making.

CONNECTING A MILLION MINDS THROUGH TIME WARNER CABLE

Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative was launched in partnership with President Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign designed to improve participation and performance of students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The Connect a Million Minds website houses online series and special events videos, some linked to TWC’s programming. There you can also use The Connectory database to search for STEM-related activities and resources in your community.

BRIGHT HOUSE TURNS THE LIGHTS ON TO THE AFTER SCHOOL ALLIANCE

Bright House Networks offers several community, education and philanthropic programs. The Classroom Innovators Grant Program provides grants that support educators with classroom resources. This past fall, the program awarded 30 grants totaling $14,237 in funding. Another Bright House initiative is Lights On Afterschool, an online photo contest that awards prizes to those photos that best depict an after school activity engaging youth in the community.

COX HELPS CLOSE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE

The partnership between Cox Communications and Connect2Compete offers discounted Internet service to any family in Cox’s territory that qualifies for the National Free School Lunch program. Cox offers its Starter High Speed service to these eligible families for $9.95 a month, which includes installation and modem rental fee. Last October, Cox announced that it was delivering faster speeds to the Connect2Compete program, at no additional cost to customers. Partnerships like this are key to expand broadband access to all and close the digital divide so all Americans have the chance to compete and succeed in our global economy.

DISNEY HIRES HEROES

Initiated in March 2012, The Walt Disney Company announced Heroes Work Here, a company-wide initiative to hire, train and support military veterans. In its first year, the program hired more than 1,300 veterans across all the company’s divisions and cable networks like ESPN and ABC Family. Hear from one of these military veterans in the video below and learn more about the program at the Heroes Work Here website.

These are just a few examples of how our member companies are impacting their communities. But the work is never over and NCTA's Cable Impacts foundation will continue to leverage cable's resources and share inspiring stories across our diverse industry.
