Cable came out strong this week as two major accolade-awarding organizations in the television industry, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, released the list of shows and actors competing for honors in early 2016.

The Golden Globes nominations included 27 for cable. HBO and Starz scored the most for cable shows, earning seven and six nominations, respectively. HBO’s Game of Thrones returns for recognition in the drama series category, and Starz’s Outlander snatched a spot in this area as well. Showtime’s The Affair, which won last year, was not nominated this year, but Maura Tierney was nominated in the best supporting actress in a series, limited series or TV movie category, and critics say she is likely to walk away with this award.

In the comedy TV series category, both HBO’s Veep and Silicon Valley are in the running, with Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus earning a nomination for best actress for the fourth year in a row.

Cable also leads in nominations in the best TV movie / limited series category. FX’s Fargo is back vying for a second win, and the network’s American Horror Story: Hotel is also a contender. Starz’s Flesh and Bone, which was recently re-categorized from being a drama to a limited series, rounds out the category.

A shout-out also to our cable superstars who snagged nominations in their respective categories, including Liev Schreiber in Ray Donovan, Patrick Stewart in Blunt Talk, and Caitriona Balfe in Outlander, to name a few.

Among the Screen Actors Guild award nominations, HBO powerhouse came out on top after Netflix with six nominations, though Showtime followed close behind with five. HBO’s Game of Thrones , Showtime’s Homeland, and AMC’s Mad Men dominate the drama series category. Cable also leads in the best male actor in a drama series category, which includes Peter Dinklage for Game of Thrones, Jon Hamm for Mad Men and Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul.

The 73rd annual Golden Globes will take place on January 10 and the 22ndScreen Actors Guild awards will be announced January 30. Stay tuned!
