STATEMENT OF NCTA PRESIDENT & CEO ROBERT SACHS
REGARDING THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE BELL COMPANIES AGREEMENT
ON STANDARDS FOR DEPLOYING BROADBAND SERVICE

“The cable industry has invested $75 billion to upgrade its infrastructure with fiber optics and deploy advanced broadband services to consumers nationwide. Over 80 million U.S. homes can now receive high-speed Internet service from their local cable operator and 12 million consumers are enjoying this service today. One of the reasons consumers choose cable modem service 2 to 1 over DSL is that cable uses standardized technology which enables consumers to buy modems at retail and use them with any cable system. We’re not surprised to see the Bell companies following cable’s lead.”
