Record Number of Cable Networks Earn Primetime Emmy Nominations

Washington, DC – Twenty-one cable networks garnered 188 Primetime Emmy nominations today from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), the greatest number of cable networks to be nominated in any one year. Also, for the sixth time, a cable network – Home Box Office (HBO) – dominated the nominations with 93, more than any other network (CBS followed HBO with 59).

“The record number of cable networks honored today demonstrates not only cable's leading creative role in the television industry, but also the diversity of programming cable provides,” said Jill Luckett, Senior Vice President, Program Network Policy, National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA). Luckett added, “This year’s nominations, along with cable's continued growth in viewership, are further evidence that cable is increasingly recognized as the outlet for high-quality, cutting-edge programming.”

HBO's two biopics, The Life And Death Of Peter Sellers and Warm Springs (about Franklin Delano Roosevelt), tied for the most Emmy nominations for an individual program, with 16 each. Other cable network achievements include Showtime with 17 nominations; A&E Network with 10 nominations; FX and TNT with eight nominations each; SCI FI Channel with seven nominations; USA Network with six nominations; Bravo, Comedy Central and Discovery Channel with five nominations; Cartoon Network and The History Channel with four nominations; Lifetime and Nickelodeon with three nominations; Animal Planet and BBC America with two nominations; and Disney Channel, ESPN, Hallmark Channel, IFC, MTV, and TCM each with one.
