CABLE INDUSTRY PSA TRIBUTE TO BE AVAILABLE IN SPANISH LANGUAGE VERSION

Additional Networks Pledge to Participate


Washington, D.C. - A thirty-second public service announcement (PSA) that will serve as the centerpiece for the cable television industry’s tribute to September 11 will be available in a Spanish-language version, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) said today.

Lifetime Television, which is creating the spot for the industry, and the Walter Kaitz Foundation, an industry organization dedicated to promoting diversity within the cable industry, have collaborated to translate the English-language text in the spot to Spanish. The availability of a Spanish-language version will ensure that Spanish-language programmers and other cable outlets can fully utilize the PSA.

NCTA announced last week that a number of cable networks had pledged to carry the PSA at 8:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 11. A variety of cable networks and multiple system operators (MSOs) advised NCTA and Lifetime regarding content for the spot. It will be constructed around original photographs from some of the nation’s leading photographers and will highlight a cross-section of positive, everyday moments in American life, emphasizing a moving and forward message of hope.

Creation of the PSA, due to be completed in early September, is being supervised by Gerry Logue, Senior Vice President and Executive Creative Director, Lifetime Television. The spot is being produced by Seiniger Advertising Group in Los Angeles.

“The availability of a Spanish-language version of this PSA will enable our diverse Hispanic networks to participate in this important tribute, and help Spanish-speaking viewers fully appreciate the PSA,” said Jim Ewalt, Vice President, Public Affairs, NCTA. “We’ve been gratified by the industry’s preliminary support of this initiative, which in fact was developed in response to the desire of many of our member companies to present a tasteful and united tribute to the heroes and victims of last September’s tragedies.”

The PSA will be distributed no later than September 6 to all networks that commit to airing it. A subsequent satellite uplink has been set for Thursday, September 12, for MSOs that wish to downlink the spot and use it in local avails.

Since last week’s announcement, several other cable networks have pledged to participate in the tribute. They include A&E Network, Access Television Network, All News Channel, BET, BET Gospel, BET Hip Hop, BET Jazz, Biography Channel, Bloomberg Television, Comcast SportsNet, Discovery en Español, Fox Movie Channel, Fox Sports Digital, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Sports World, Fox Sports World en Español, FX, G4, Golf Channel, Goodlife TV Network, Hallmark Channel, History Channel, History International, National Geographic Channel, New England Sports Network, Outdoor Life Network, Oxygen, SoapNet, Speed Channel, TechTV, TV Guide Channel, USA Network, WGN Superstation, and YES Network.

Previously pledging to participate in the effort were more than three dozen cable networks. That list included ABC Family, AMC, Animal Planet, Bravo, Comedy Central, Court TV, DIY, Discovery Channel, Discovery Civilization Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Home & Leisure Channel, Discovery Science Channel, Discovery Wings Channel, Fine Living, Food Network, Game Show Network, Goodlife TV Network, HGTV, IFC, International Channel Networks, Lifetime Movie Network, Lifetime Real Women, Lifetime Television, MetroChannels, muchmusic usa, News 12 Networks, The Outdoor Channel, Ovation, Starz Encore Group, TBS Superstation, The New TNN, TLC, TNT, Travel Channel, Turner South, TV Land, WE: Women’s Entertainment, The Weather Channel, and Wisdom Television.

Commitments from additional networks are being sought by NCTA, which also is urging networks to air the spot at 8:00 p.m. PDT, for viewers in the West.

NCTA is the principal trade association of the cable television industry in the United States. NCTA represents cable operators serving more than 90 percent of the nation's cable television households and more than 200 cable program networks, as well as equipment suppliers and providers of other services to the cable industry.
