Washington, D.C. – Top U.S. Congressional leaders will help kick off the National Cable & Telecommunications Association’s 50th Annual Convention and International Exposition, June 10 – 13, 2001 at Chicago’s McCormick Place.

On Monday, June 11, at 11:00 a.m., House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) will cut the ribbon officially opening the Cable 2001 exhibition floor, followed immediately by a press availability and tour of the floor. Hastert will be followed by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), who will address invited guests at NCTA’s Public Policy Luncheon. The luncheon is open to the media, but reservations must be made by calling Lori Chang at NCTA.

  • Opening General Session The Strongest Link: The Media World Comes to Cable – Monday, June 11 at 9:15 a.m. – Sue Herera, co-host of CNBC’s Business Center will host a panel featuring some of the industry’s top leaders – including C. Michael Armstrong, Chairman and CEO of AT&T; Jerry Kent, President and CEO of Charter Communications; Mel Karmazin, President and COO of Viacom, Inc.; and Brian Roberts, President and CEO of Comcast Corp.
  • Featured Breakout Session Municipal Bonds: Cable’s Ties to the Cities – Monday, June 11 at 11:00 a.m. – Lester Holt, anchor of MSNBC’s NewsFront will host a panel of large and small city leaders to discuss joint municipal/industry initiatives to speed broadband deployment. Panel to include: Mayor Bill Campbell, Atlanta, GA; Mayor Jim Dailey, Little Rock, AR; Mayor Timothy Fulkerson, New Castle, PA; Mayor Michael Guido, Dearborn, MI; City Manager Tom Hall, LaGrange, IL; and Councilman Greg Nordbak, Whittier, CA.

NCTA also announced that all four general sessions during Cable 2001 will be webcast live, and made available on-demand through July, 2001 at www.cable2001.com. In addition to the live webcasts, a daily 3-minute highlight video will be available on-demand each day during the show. The highlights will feature video clips from the exhibition floor, breakout sessions and other events. The webcast will be provided by Digital Island.
