Statement of NCTA – The Internet & Television Association Regarding the FCC’s Digital Discrimination Proceeding

“The cable industry is proud of its history of offering next-generation broadband internet throughout its service areas. Through decades of investment and billions of dollars in private capital, the industry has built high-speed networks that are widely available and has continuously upgraded the technology and the quality of offerings, regardless of income level, race, ethnicity, color, religion, or national origin.

“The proof is in the pudding. As NCTA filed in the record, cable broadband providers offer gigabit service in their service footprints to:

  • 99.5% of homes and businesses in areas with the highest percentage of African-American residents, compared to 98.1% of homes and businesses in areas with the lowest percentage of African-American residents.
  • 99.6% of homes and businesses with the highest percentage of Hispanic/Latino residents, and 97.4% of homes and businesses in areas with the lowest percentage of Hispanic/Latino residents
  • 100% of homes and businesses with the highest percentage of Asian American residents, and 98.1% of homes and businesses in areas with the lowest percentage of Asian American residents
  • 98.2% of homes and businesses in urban areas where the median annual household income is below $35,000 and to 99.8% of homes and businesses where the median annual income is above $100,000.

“The bottom line is that as the cable industry continues to expand the capabilities and reach of its networks toward multi-gig 10G technology, we are deploying our fastest services to communities regardless of income level or race.”
