Statement of NCTA Executive Vice President James Assey Regarding Approval of the Pole Attachment and Wireless Data Roaming Items at Today’s FCC Meeting

“We commend Chairman Genachowski and the full Commission for their pro-consumer actions today on pole attachments and data roaming. These issues represent some of the key building blocks for promoting the continued deployment of wired and wireless broadband services across the nation.

“Adopting low and uniform pole attachment rates and clarifying the rules will provide much-needed regulatory certainty that will permit broadband providers to extend their networks to unserved communities while fairly compensating pole owners. And adopting enforceable data roaming rights will enable new entrants to compete on a nationwide basis and give consumers more choice and flexibility in wireless services.”

NCTA is the principal trade association for the U.S. cable industry, representing cable operators serving more than 90 percent of the nation's cable television households and more than 200 cable program networks. The cable industry is the nation’s largest broadband provider of high-speed Internet access, serving more than 43 million customers, after investing more than $170 billion to build two-way interactive networks with fiber optic technology. Cable companies also provide state-of-the-art digital telephone service to more than 23 million American consumers.
