Keynote Systems annually conducts its VoIP Competitive Intelligence study to evaluate how end-users perceive the core reliability and audio clarity of leading VoIP service providers. The study evaluates audio quality as well as underlying network performance that affect the end-user experience and compares them across various VoIP service providers and traditional phone service.
The third annual VoIP Competitive Intelligence Study found that the VoIP phone service of cable companies, which utilizes PacketCable, outscored traditional phone networks, in terms of both reliability and audio quality. Overall quality rankings put cable first, followed by traditional phones service and adapter-based VoIP (hard phones), with PC-based software (soft phone) services trailing.
Keynote measures overall reliability based on service availability, average number of dial attempts and dropped calls. Leading cable VoIP providers were also found to deliver excellent audio responsiveness (a measure of audio delay) and audio clarity (measured by Mean Opinion Score, or MOS), two key contributors to overall audio quality.
