How does OpenCable benefit consumers?

Through OpenCable technology, consumers can enjoy TV program innovations, convenient navigation features, viewing enhancements, interactive services and cross-platform sharing of content.

Who developed the OpenCable Platform?

OpenCable was developed through Cable Televisions Laboratories (CableLabs), the cable industry’s research and development consortium, in partnership with hundreds of companies, including some of the biggest names in consumer electronics, home computing and software development.

You’ve said that with OpenCable, devices can “talk” to each other.  How does that work?

OpenCable provides the opportunity for different kinds of devices to share data and information.  For instance, if a consumer has an OpenCable-enabled set-top box or TV, a mobile phone user might be able to check his or her local cable programming lineup by phone, and then use the phone to vote for a favorite singing contestant on a TV talent show.  Also, while watching the show, a viewer might then check e-mail on the TV screen, click to get a catalog for a new car model, and then check out the local weather in an interactive application.

How does OpenCable help cable systems?

Since it is a “universal technology,” OpenCable helps speed the delivery of interactive services to customers and provides more opportunities for convergence of content across video, voice and Internet platforms.
