Digital Cable Ready Equipment / CableCARDs - Q & A

What is the benefit of devices that use CableCARDs?

TVs and other equipment with slots for CableCARDs allow consumers to enjoy digital cable services without the need for a set-top box.

Why aren’t TVs and other devices two-way or interactive with CableCARDs?

Some manufacturers in 2008 are beginning to introduce TVs and other devices that can receive cable’s interactive services without a set-top box.  This two-way interaction is enabled through cable’s deployment of the tru2way software platform (we should link here to the tru2way brief).

Is a formal agreement necessary for the production of two-way devices that use CableCARDs?

No. Another avenue for manufacturers to build two-way devices is through a license approved by CableLabs, the cable industry’s research and development organization. Several consumer electronics manufacturers have signed the agreement and are beginning production of interactive devices, with introduction of some devices expected in 2008.

Why do set-top boxes that require CableCARDs cost more?

There is an additional cost associated with re-engineering boxes to add the CableCARD slot.  However, there are no additional benefits for consumers, yet they will likely bear the brunt of the costs.

If I get a new set-top box from my cable provider, will it have a CableCARD slot?

Most cable operators are required to provide customers who are getting a set-top box for the first time, or are getting a new set-top box, a device that has a CableCARD.
